We learn in many different ways and through many different means. We learn through life and work experience, self-study, training on-the-job and formal credit and non-credit courses. PLR (Prior Learning Recognition) provides an opportunity to recognize previous knowledge and skills while allowing individuals to build on their existing knowledge.
In the past, post-secondary educational institutions only gave credit for learning that occurred through formal instruction in their own classrooms. Even courses from similar post-secondary educational institutions often were not recognized. Prior Learning Recognition is changing this practice.TGOU provides the opportunity for students to apply to have prior learning considered towards Degree course where the prior learning is related to assessable components of the course. Forms of prior learning include previous study from recognized institutions, relevant work or life experience or courses undertaken outside recognized institutes.
Because PLR is an evaluation that determines equivalency for credit to a TGOU course, it may save you time and eliminate repetitive training when you are enrolled.
PLR uses a valid and reliable assessment of the knowledge and skills you learned through non-formal education, training or experience such as: |
- Work experience
- On-the-job training
- Training courses from private organizations
- Seminars and workshops
- Independent study
- Volunteer work
- Community activities
|
 |
The PLR process helps you identify your previous learning. This learning is then compared to TGOU course outcomes. If your non-formal learning matches identified TGOU course outcomes, you will earn credit for that course. |
| |
| You will be asked to provide documented evidence of your previous learning. This documentation may include: |
- Work records
- Skill validations
- Performance appraisals
- Training records
- Course outlines
- Content descriptions
|
| |
Your evidence will be matched with the course learning outcomes you are challenging for credit. TGOU program content experts will evaluate your knowledge and skills.
If you have already taken courses from another accredited or unaccredited institution, you may be eligible for a Degree or credits towards a Degree.
Your assessment may include a variety of techniques such as: |
- Standardized tests & Performance tests
- demonstrations
- simulations
- a portfolio
- interviews
- oral examinations & work samples
